Frequently Asked Questions

Tutors and matching process

How do you choose your tutors?

Our priority is finding highly qualified tutors who are not only possess expert subject knowledge but can connect with your child in order to make learning a fun and rewarding experience! We interview each tutor before bringing them on in order to fully understand who they are, what they value, and how they share their knowledge.

Each tutor goes through our Ripple Induction process to ensure that they align with our values, and they have access to the full collection of bespoke Ripple Tutor resources to allow them to make every lesson with your child a fun and productive learning experience.

Are your tutors DBS checked?

Yes, at Ripple Learning, the safety of our students is paramount: all of our tutors must hold a valid Enhanced DBS certificate before giving tuition to our students.

I’m interested in having a first session. How do you choose the right tutor for my child?

We will have an initial call with you to establish your child’s needs and personality: where they thrive, where they need help, and how they learn. This will allow us to choose a tutor we know that you’ll love from our portfolio who best meets these needs, based on their teaching style and subject knowledge.

Payments

How much does 1-to-1 tuition with Ripple Learning cost?

As of March 2021, 1-to-1 tuition with Ripple Learning begins at £45p/h depending on your child’s needs and the tutor’s experience.

Do you offer a free trial?

While we do not offer free trials, we’re very confident in our tutor matching process – if after the first session you opt to not move forward with the tutor, you will not be billed for that session. If you do choose to continue with our tuition then the first session is payable and will be included in your first invoice.

Do you charge a registration fee?

No, there are no additional registration fees when joining Ripple Learning.

How does payment work?

Ripple Learning acts as an agent and invoices on behalf of its tutors, meaning that clients pay for tuition directly to Ripple Learning via bank transfer, as opposed to cash payments to tutors.

Clients are invoiced in advance for a half-term worth of sessions (between 5-7 sessions in total, depending on length of the half-term). Invoices are sent out by Ripple Learning during the week leading up to each new half-term.

It is expected that lessons occur on a weekly basis as we believe that the continuity and sense of routine offered by weekly sessions is fundamental to building momentum in a student’s learning, and therefore their academic progress.

If you have any questions relating to payment and rates, please refer these to Ripple Head Office.

Can my child start tuition mid-way through a term?

Yes, of course – in this case, Ripple Learning will simply invoice for the remaining weeks until the next holiday break.

What happens if we can’t attend a session?

If for any reason your child is unable to attend their session please notify the tutor as early as possible. Please discuss a good time to reschedule this session with your tutor – holiday periods can be useful for this. If you cannot reschedule the session within the half-term for which it was invoiced it can be carried forward to the next half-term, reducing the cost of the next invoice.

Please be aware that late-notice cancellations (within 24 hours) are chargeable.

General

Who do we contact to discuss academic progress?

Your child’s tutor is the best person to discuss your child’s academic progress with, given their weekly sessions and relationship with your child. We will discuss your expectations for progress with you prior to your child beginning their tuition.

We are currently exploring school options for our child. Is this something you can help with?

Absolutely. We have an in-depth knowledge of the selective school system and are on hand to guide you during the school transition process. This support includes guidance on productive exam-preparation resources and practices, information about key dates you should be aware of, and general advice about the selection process. Please get in touch with Ripple Head Office to discuss your needs in this regard.

Can my child have online tuition? If so, what will they need?

The ongoing COVID-19 restrictions mean that we are happy to be flexible to yours and your child’s needs. Ripple Learning offers both in-person (restrictions allowing) and online tuition – in our experience, children have adapted very well to online 1-to-1 tuition and many prefer it!

If you do opt for online tuition you will need a tablet and good internet connection, and we will guide you through the set-up prior to your initial session.

If you have any questions not covered here, we will be more than happy to discuss them with you. You can get in touch using our contact form, or give us a call.
